Iomega has become the latest company to enter the mobile hard disk market via the launch of its new USB 2.0 Mini Hard Drive. This sleek external disk drive weighs just 99 grams and because it uses super small 1.8” technology, is small enough to slot neatly into a user’s shirt pocket. The Mini Hard Drive has a capacity of 40GB and is the first Iomega hard drive to receive 100% of its power from a standard USB data port - meaning mobile professionals with demanding storage needs can travel light yet shouldn't run out of storage space. "The Iomega Mini Hard Drive is host-powered, small, and weighs next to nothing, so it is a great choice for mobile professionals and students," said Chris McPherson, managing director, Asia Pacific, Iomega Pacific. "Using a Mini Hard Drive is extremely simple: just connect it to your computer's USB port and you're ready to take your files anywhere. You won't find a simpler product on the market." According to Iomega, because its hard drive is built around 1.8” disk technology (rather than the industry standard size of 2.5”), this makes it smaller and more energy-efficient than competing portable drives. It rocks along at a speed of 4,200rpm and is encased in a rugged aluminium frame. Its USB interface meanwhile is the fastest USB 2.0 version, meaning data transfers are super quick (at up to 480Mbits per second). The Mini Hard Drive costs $299 and comes with a leather travel case, USB cable and software CD. Iomega’s Mini Hard Drive faces stiff competition from mobile USB disks such as Hitachi’s ‘MobileDisk’ (available in various capacities) and Western Digital’s new ‘Passport’ (available in 40- and 80GB versions and due to be reviewed in the June issue of Windows Middle East magazine).
