Up to 90% of the parcels of land at Bahrain’s Al Areen Desert Spa & Resort have been sold to private sector developers, according to a top official associated with the project. “Some 90% of the development parcels have been sold to a group of leading local and international contracting and tourism companies, which will develop various land parcels according to the blueprint package, development specifications and strategy of Al Areen Desert Spa & Resort,” said Esam Janahi, vice-chairman of the Al Areen Holding Company. He was speaking at a ceremony held in Manama to mark the completion of the construction of Al Areen Holding Company headquarters. The headquarters at Elite Suites, Manama, were inaugurated by Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, governor of the Southern Governorate and president of the Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment & Wildlife. Janahi added that the Al Areen Desert Spa & Resort will include residential, commercial, hospitality, recreational and entertainment facilities under the supervision of the holding company. The holding company will also be responsible for developing the infrastructure, water park and spa as the main components of the development. “The names of the current developers as well as the remaining and available parcels will soon be announced,” he said. Al Areen’s holding company recently announced the appointment of a consortium led by the Lebanon-based Erga Group for the master plan and urban design of the development. Along with its international partners Borja and A4 (Chile); Ian Hogan (UK); and François Gauthier (France); the Erga Group has been involved in the development from the initial concept, master planning and feasibility studies to schematic and detailed designs, tendering, site supervision, and post-contract problem solving. Janahi said that the US $750 million Al Areen Desert Spa & Resort has crossed a significant milestone with the opening of its headquarters in Manama. “It will expedite the development of the mixed-use project that encompasses a spa resort, themed residential communities, hotels and a water park, as well as commercial and entertainment facilities. It will speed up the implementation of the development.”
