ProCurve Networking by HP has unveiled a secure, cost-effective branch office router, extending the security framework of the ProCurve Adaptive Edge architecture from edge-to-edge of the network. The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl series connects enterprise branch offices to a headquarter site at the WAN edge and provides edge-to-edge connectivity. The versatile platform adds security to restrict unauthorised access and offers wire-speed performance at an affordable price with integrated convergence features. Additionally, with the 7000dl series, small to mid-size businesses can provide a secure and reliable connection to the Internet and remote virtual private network (VPN) access to their employees. The routers include a stateful firewall to prevent denial of service attacks, offer access control list (ACL) and virtual local area network (VLAN) support to restrict traffic flow, and include an 802.1X supplicant. To support an increasingly mobile workforce, the 7000dl series provides optional IPSec VPN termination to allow remote users to connect to their corporate office over the internet. The first two products to be introduced as part of ProCurve’s WAN portfolio include the 7102dl and 7203dl routers. The 7102dl router includes two slots to support modular WAN interface cards and is designed to support up to four T1/E1 connections. The 7203dl router includes two slots and one wide slot to support modular WAN interface cards and is designed to support up to 12 T1/E1 connections. Using an industry-standard command line interface (CLI), the Secure Router 7000dl Series is designed to minimise the amount of training or certification required to support configuration. The routers reduce complexity with a feature-rich graphics user interface (GUI) that allows for easy configuration of the firewall, ACLs and VPN connections. Additionally, all routers include a compact flash port to enable easy installation by booting configuration and image files from the flash drive without having to be command-line savvy. ProCurve has further expanded its offering by releasing an Access Controller Module for the ProCurve Switch 5300xl. This is designed to enable a wireless network edge with secure, mobile and appropriate access to multiple services over a single network. HP says this removes the need to have authentication software on a user’s client, moving the functionality to the edge of the network and providing hassle-free access with a high level of security. In related security news, ProCurve earlier this month announced it has enhanced its 5300 switches and ProCurve Manager with HP Virus Throttle technology, providing more detection, prevention and response to virus threats. The solution, based on technology developed at HP Labs, detects worm activity as traffic enters the LAN and passes through the network switch. The infection is then “throttled” back to allow the network manager to react and take action before the virus spreads. “We continue to build breakthrough solutions with advanced features at affordable prices. With this announcement, ProCurve Networking by HP is meeting our customers’ current—and future—security needs for the WAN, LAN and WLAN. Companies can now turn to ProCurve for a complete end-to-end networking infrastructure that can easily grow and evolve with their business needs,” says John McHugh, vice president and general manager, ProCurve Networking by HP. “ProCurve is delivering innovation to today’s networks with Virus Throttle and takes a more strategic approach than other networking providers by delivering a built-in, not bolted-on, solution that provides greater security,” he adds. The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl series is expected to be available in April. The 7102dl router chassis has an EMEA list price of US$1678. The 7203dl router chassis has an EMEA list price of US$3360. The Switch xl Access Controller Module for the ProCurve 5300xl switch is expected to be available in April and has an estimated EMEA list price of US$5273. The Virus Throttle solution is available now and is offered as a free software download for customers who currently own or purchase the ProCurve Switch 5300xl and ProCurve Manager Plus.
