Survey exposes Jordan’s cellular boom

The Arab Advisors survey reveals the technological preferences of Jordanians.

A survey into the media and telecom usage habits of people from three major Jordanian cities has uncovered some surprising trends. Conducted by the Arab Advisors Group, in the cities of Amman, Irbid and Zarqa, the study shows that over 90% of households have a satellite television. This growth in ownership in the country is having a negative impact on terrestrial channels, as it seems that less than half the population are now tuning into the media. Arab Advisors discovered that while fixed line household penetration stands at 76%, a massive 71% now also have a cellular line. The survey also looked into ILD calling patterns, destinations, and preference for calling times, revealing that the predominant means of making international calls was through a fixed line as cellular lines still prove to be relatively expensive. The group’s analytical survey also explored dialup and broadband internet usage, market shares of providers and levels of customer satisfaction among many other issues. It involved face-to-face interviews with over six hundred people from different households in Jordan, and participants were selected randomly from different areas in the city proportionate to the population size of those different areas. The survey, a multi-client project of Arab Advisors custom research and consulting service, was not commissioned by any party. Its results are available for all companies and interested parties in the form of two major reports, the Jordan Households Telecom Service Survey 2005 and the Jordan Households Media Survey 2005 which detail valuable demographic information for businesses. The media survey shows that some 5% of households with satellite television have access to pay-per-view channels and the market shares of the various providers are detailed and analysed alongside information about the specific viewing and entertainment preferences of the respondents. On the other hand, the telecom service branch of the survey reveals in depth the usage patterns, providers and market shares of various telecom provisions including fixed and cellular phone use, handset models, and SMS and MMS services. It also concentrated on issues of internet chatting and email use, and outlined public preferences relating to personal computers and dialup and broadband internet use.
