Bahrain Radio and TV Corporation (BRTC) has teamed up with MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) to develop and deliver more interactive services for television viewers. SMS2TV and SMS2Radio services allow BRTC to develop an interactive relationship with its audience by allowing them to send messages from their mobile phones to be aired on the radio station or scrolled out on television. SMS texts are sent by viewers to share their views, vote on various topics or participate in competitions or social and political talk shows. The messages are received by a computer in the studio and are scanned for suitability before being shared with the audience. “A window is superimposed on the programme on air and enables users to chat with friends and loved ones while watching TV,” says Mahmoud Hashish, chief commercial officer at MTC-Vodafone, Bahrain. One major factor that boosted the infotainment sector, according to Hashish, was the success of live interaction during the GCC Cup tournament, where MTC-Vodafone, Bahrain’s customers were able to participate in competitions on TV and radio via SMS. “Our goal is to redefine the wireless future and further open up services available to mobile phone users. For the mobile industry, infotainment services offer an immediate opportunity, and brings with it a broad demographic reach,” says Hashish. Speaking about their new partnership, Maria Khoury, marketing director of BRTC adds: “The idea is to combine media to provide customers and viewers with a richer experience. We had a successful experience with MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) with the launch of the region’s first LiveTV2Mobile. Now it’s time to offer our users more value-added infotainment services.”
