Three new carriers joined Dubai’s Freezone Logistics Centre (FLC) last month, bringing the total number of operators at the facility to 42. Operated by Dnata at the Dubai Airport Free Zone, Al-Rais Cargo from Iran, AST Pakistan and Bulgaria’s Vega Airlines — who all joined the freezone — are now able to use the self-handling facility and direct access to airside for their business. Dnata’s executive vice president, Ismail Ali Albanna said that flights entering Dubai had grown over the past year due to the arrival of new operators to the freezone and this is set to increase next year. “Since the FLC opened its doors it has been Dubai’s answer for many scheduled and charter operators seeking efficient and cost effective freight handling services,” he said. “The facility recorded tremendous growth last year, welcoming new operators as well as increased flight frequencies from existing operators. On average, there were 750 flights operating from the FLC each month,” Albanna added. As more operators move to the facility, a new phase of expansion at the FLC is taking place, to build a fully automated cargo handling centre with a 300,000 tonne capacity. Dnata had previously doubled the FLC’s capacity in 2003 by adding over 12,000 square metres of warehouse space, airline office space and a business centre. Jean-Pierre De Pauw, Dnata Cargo’s senior vice president said that the latest phase of expansion is in response to FLC handling 51,000 tonnes of cargo from April to September 2004, a 54% increase on the same period the previous year. “The expansion will double the size of the existing facility, adding another 20,300 square metres of warehouse and office space. We expect the expansion programme to be completed by the end of the year,” added De Pauw.
