January 2005 may go down in gadget history as The Month When Apple Became Affordable. Not content with launching an iPod for under $100, the fruity ones are also bringing us an entry-level desktop computer at an equally unlikely price. Housed in the 2 inch tall white box is all the software which has seen floods of PC users move over to the other side: Mac OS X and the iLife ’05 collection, which includes iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand. The cheaper model, priced at $499, packs a 1.25GHz processor, 40GB hard drive and internal wireless and Bluetooth support, and for $100 more you get a 1.42GHz processor and double the storage. Admittedly you have to supply your own peripherals (mouse, display, keyboard), but for the price that seems only fair. We hope you’re listening to this, Mr Gates.
