The National Hospitality Institute (NHI) in Oman opened its first dedicated Gulf Chefs School in December. The UK’s master chef Anthony Worral Thompson inaugurated it during a recent visit to the country. The new school offers a foundation programme for school leavers fully funded by the government or private sector, followed by an intermediate course, designed as a continuation to the foundation course, that can be funded by the employer or the individual. Following this, there are two advanced courses delivered on a day release basis over a period of 18 months. “The new school is a turning point in the training and employment of Omanis in the hospitality industry in Oman and the Gulf region,” says Robert MacLean, principal of NHI. The new school will offer a diversified range of programmes within the cookery discipline, offering a one-stop shop for all the training requirements of local industry, according to MacLean. “We are planning to source business from other parts of the Gulf and see the Gulf Chefs School as a centre of excellence for the region,” he told Hotelier Middle East. The Gulf Chefs School courses are designed for working chefs who wish to add an international qualification to their resume while remaining at work. The advanced options include courses in patisserie or larder, for those who wish to specialise in either area. There is also a supervisory qualification available on a day release basis for those pursuing a management route. MacLean emphasised that NHI was not departing from its core craft programmes, but instead redefining them in such away that provided more choice to the employer and the individual worker. The courses are internationally accredited by the UK’s Hospitality Awarding Body. The Gulf Chef School is located at the NHI premises in Wadi Kabir and offers state-of-the-art-kitchen training facilities, led by team leader Stephen Hamer.
