Dell has unveiled two new servers for small and home business use. The firm’s new PowerEdge models are complemented by tailorable hardware and software support to make it simple for first-time server buyers to get (and stay) up and running, an important consideration for smaller operations with no dedicated IT staff member. “The ease-of-use, value and support of these servers make it even easier for small businesses to run their networks on server-class technologies,” said Jim McMahon, enterprise business manager, Dell Middle East. “Through these scalable hardware, software and support offerings, Dell is enabling businesses of all sizes to take advantage of affordable technology without sacrificing their capacity for growth.” Designed to be flexible, affordable and easy to implement, Dell’s new PowerEdge SC420 and SC1420 servers are available with varied service and support packages. Dell describes its SC420 model as “a small business’s first server” as the system has been designed to make it easy for new users to set-up, run and troubleshoot a server for the first time. The SC420 retails at $659. The firm’s second release, the PowerEdge SC1420, starts from $1,049 and features easy-to-use management tools such as Dell's Server Assistant for PowerEdge SC CD. The company claims this tool simplifies and speeds server installation so much so that customers can get their server up and running in as little as 30 minutes. Also on offer are new online diagnostics with which customers can connect directly to a Dell service professional over the internet if they have a query or problem. Buyers of either new PowerEdge can choose to have Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 pre-installed on their machine and in terms of on-going support Dell is offering a range of service plans, which can include set-up support during initial configuration, 24/7 phone and online help, on-site support, training and certification programs, and disaster recovery backup.
