Acer claims Saudi notebook advantage

A quarter of all notebooks sold in Saudi Arabia over the last twelve months were Acer models, according to the latest findings by analysts IDC.

A quarter of all notebooks sold in Saudi Arabia over the last twelve months were Acer models, according to the latest research findings by analysts IDC. IDC’s new figures show Acer with year-on-year growth in the Kingdom of 360%, making it the main notebook supplier for a full 12-month period. However the firm has grown its market share more in the UAE, establishing itself as the number two notebook vendor behind HP with growth of 559% from the third quarter of 2003 to the same period this year. “Our strategy of supplying the most advanced technology at affordable prices is paying dividends,” said Krishna Murthy, general manager, Acer Computer ME. “Consumers in Saudi Arabia clearly appreciate this approach, and are reassured by the stability of Acer and our strong relations with local Saudi distributors.” According to IDC’s figures, Acer sold 12,583 notebooks in Saudi Arabia during the third quarter of 2004, up from 2,735 in 2003, representing a market share of 24.9%. In the UAE, 15,376 units were sold this Q3, up from 2,334 last year. This gives Acer a UAE notebook market share of 20.4%. Acer posted record global sales during the month of September after revenues rocketed up 41.5% year-on-year to hit US$637.49m worldwide. The Middle East operation played a prominent role in delivering this hefty top line growth, with Acer Middle East also posting its highest ever September sales.
