Hong Kong-based storage media manufacturer Microdia plans to appoint distributors across the Middle East and open an office in Dubai to spearhead its entry into the regional market. “The Microdia name is established in Europe, the US and Asia, and our intent is to replicate that success in the Middle East,” explained Louis Leung , executive director for strategic international sales and marketing at Microdia. “Our office will be operational soon, but will focus solely on marketing, so we want to get strong distributors on board who will work with us to build the brand and take market share.” According to Leung, the market for storage devices like flash memory has risen rapidly and shows no signs of slowing as more digital products make use of the technology. “Business is going through the roof, and we expect growth to be even greater over the coming year fuelled by integrated camera phones. Major manufacturers have told us that they will be launching mobile phones with cameras capable of taking six megapixel pictures and that is going to significantly up demand for storage.” Despite the increase in digital media, the industry has been hit hard by the increasing competition. While Leung acknowledged that margins were low, consolidation in the business could lead to increased profits for those who tough it out in the current climate. Microdia produces a range of storage media, wireless products and Bluetooth accessories. Its latest offerings include a Bluetooth headset MP3 player, wireless router points and 8Gb compact flash cards. Microdia’s sales topped US$600m in the last 12 months and the company is confident it can boost revenues 50% during the year ahead.
