Siemens Communications strengthens position in Pakistan

Pakistan is experiencing a boost in business activity across the country and partnering with Siemens enables U-Fone to provide improved coverage and voice quality to a large area of the country.

Siemens Communications Mobile Networks has been awarded a US$32 million contract by PTML (Pakistan Telecom Mobile Ltd), commercially known as U-Fone. The new partnership will enable Pakistan’s second largest mobile operator – with 1.3 million subscribers – to increase its subscriber base by a further 500,000. Having emerged as the most prominent player in the market since its inception in 2001, U-Fone is the driving force behind extending mobile communication services in the rapidly emerging country. Pakistan is experiencing a boost in business activity across the country and partnering with Siemens Communications enables U-Fone to provide improved coverage and voice quality to a large area of the country. As the market leader in Pakistan, Siemens Communications boasts a strong presence in three out of four GSM operators in the country. “Providing scalable, tailor-made solutions to meet the needs of customers has positioned Siemens as the number one mobile service provider in Pakistan,” says Soenke Peters, vice president and head of Siemens Communications Mobile Networks Middle East headquarters. “At Siemens Communications, we understand it is the superior voice quality, high standards of support and our ability to execute full turn key contracts, which we offer to U-Fone and its subscribers, that has made us market leaders,” Peters adds. Furthermore, Peters says his company has worked extensively with operators across the world, enabling them to offer numerous voice, multimedia and data services to their customers – wherever they may be at the time. The project, which is expected to be complete by May next year, further strengthens Siemens Communications’ presence in Pakistan. Just a year ago, the two companies signed a similar contract –valued at US$26 million. “Siemens Communications has an established presence in Pakistan and we have successfully demonstrated to leading decision-makers that we have a deep understanding of the local market. We look forward to maintaining a leading position in this burgeoning market,” says Peters.
