Symantec has announced the availability of PC Anywhere 11.5, the new version of the vendor’s remote control solution. Scheduled to be widely available across the region in early 2005, PC Anywhere 11.5 will be targeted at mobile professionals, small businesses, value-added resellers (VARs) and IT departments in medium-sized to large organizations. According to the IT security company, PC Anywhere 11.5 combines a secure and feature-rich remote control product with remote management and advanced file transfer capabilities to quickly resolve help desk and server support problems across multiple platforms such as Windows, Linux, Windows Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition all from a single management interface. “As Middle Eastern organisations are looking to implement remote control and remote management technologies as a means to minimise help desk support costs. [Also] the with the number of mobile professionals on the increase, security concerns are without doubt the number one deciding factor in choosing the right solution,” says Vikram Suri, country manager, Symantec Gulf. “PC Anywhere 11.5 not only meets the security requirements that have become mandatory but also offers superior support for a broad range of platforms and devices.” Additional security options include AES encryption (up to 256-bit cipher strength) as well as host address blocking as well as default encryption of login information. Other security options include 13 different methods of authentication (including RSA SecurID authentication), serialisation, mandatory passwords, integrity checking, the ability to specify TCP/IP addresses and subnets that are allowed to connect, and the option to hide PC Anywhere hosts from TCP/IP browse lists. In addition, the remote control software also offers cross-platform support and the ability to remotely manage a broader range of devices. Accessibility options new in this version include PC Anywhere for Mobile; Linux Host; Web Remote, which enables users to securely manage their remote Windows and Linux systems through a Java-based web interface on Windows or Linux without the need for dual-boot or multiple devices. Symantec also claims to offer improved video performance levels besides optional bandwidth auto-detect function that detects the speed of each connection and optimises the settings. A new connection wizard assists novice users or rotating IT staff in establishing and launching a connection quickly and easily. In addition to the standalone version, PC Anywhere is also available as an add-on solution for Symantec ON iCommand, Symantec’s infrastructure management solution for heterogeneous enterprise environments, which combines secure remote control with advanced file transfer capabilities to help IT administrators quickly resolve help desk and server support problems. A thin host of PC Anywhere is embedded in the vendor's Live State Recovery family of products, Symantec’s disk-based system and data recovery solutions, to allow IT administrators to remotely restore servers and desktops using the Symantec Recovery Disk. NetOp, TightVNC, Timbuktu Pro from Netopia, GotomyPC.com, an online remote control service recently acquired by thin-client vendor Citrix and a host of similar free and commercial products are now available, which compete closely with Symantec’s products. The pricing of its most recent version PC Anywhere 11.0 Host & Remote for a five-user small office pack was around US$700. Symantec Middle East did not disclose the exact schedule of region availability and pricing for the new version.
