Plextor has unveiled the ConvertX PVR PX-TV402U personal video recorder, an external USB device for PC that it claims is the world’s first real-time DivX certified product of its kind. The PX-TV402U is a USB 2.0 product that allows users to connect their satellite receiver, cable or broadcast TV signal in order to watch and record TV programmes and home videos, either to a PC or onto DVD. The device also allows users to store data on their computer for watching at a later date or burn such data direct to DVD. “Following our successful launch into the digital video conversion market with the ConvertX PX-M402U earlier this year, Plextor is now able to offer a solution for transforming a PC into a complete digital home entertainment centre, at a highly cost effective price,” said Rudy De Meirsman, sales and marketing manager, Plextor Europe. “The new PX-TV402U enables an ordinary home PC to perform multiple tasks by incorporating the functionalities of a television, video and DVD player/recorder.“ Plextor claims the ability to record video in real time and directly into DivX format means the PX-TV402U lets users store up to three times more video than other devices. The firm asserts this ability saves users time too as there is no need to use a software-encoding programme to convert video to DivX format after capture. Supporting DivX, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 formats, the PX-TV402U works with PCs that run either Windows 2000 or XP. It also comes bundled with Intervideo WinDVR software, to watch and pause live TV and to record programmes, and Intervideo WinDVD Creator software, which allows the capturing and editing of home videos as well as the authoring of interactive DVDs. The ConvertX PVR PX-TV402U will be available from the end of December priced $245. Known as “the MP3 of video”, DivX is the brand name of an increasingly popular video compression technology. DivX is effectively a codec (short for compression/decompression), in other words a piece of software that compresses video down to a size that is transportable over the Internet without affecting its quality.
