The winners of the inaugural Construction Week Awards were announced on 21st November in a ceremony held at Fairmont Hotel, Dubai. The event, attended by more than 250 representatives from the Middle East’s construction industry, saw four awards presented. The Project of the Year award went to Dubai Tourism Development Company for its Dubailand initiative, while Dubai Municipality picked up the Best Community Project prize for the Dubai Light Rail. Emaar Properties walked off with the Most Innovative Project of the Year Award for the Burj Dubai, while the Special Achievement Award went to Nakheel for its impressive World and Palms projects. “Emaar Properties, Nakheel, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Tourism Development Company have not only led the latest construction boom in the Gulf, but they have brought a new way of thinking to the sector and pulled the industry out of its traditional complacency,” says Walid Akawi, managing director of ITP Business, publisher of Construction Week. “Perhaps even more importantly, they have forced the local industry onto the global stage in record time and made the region a beacon for the construction industry across the world,” he adds. The event was also marked by the announcement that Construction Week is going regional. From this edition, readers across the entire Middle East will be able to get their weekly fix of industry news from the region’s leading construction title. The newspaper’s circulation and distribution increase, and it will report on events not just in the UAE but across the region. “Within a year of its launch, CW has become the leader in its field. Subscriptions are up and readers are turning away from other titles,” says Akawi. “It was time to give our readers right across the Middle East the title they want, while giving our advertisers a medium that will allow them to communicate effectively with customers throughout the Arabian Peninsula.”
