Sun Microsystems plans to recruit retail partners to distribute a selection of its software products. Sun’s retail offering, which includes both operating systems and office applications, will be launched in the Middle East in early 2005. “The channel we have had in place has been more value-oriented. The area we are now looking at on the software side is much more of commodity business,” said Graham Porter, marketing manager, Sun Microsystems MENA. “We have never worked with retailers as we have not had a retail product before. Sun now needs to start dealing with the likes of Carrefour, CompuMe, Plug-Ins and Jarir Bookstore.” Sun’s retail recruitment drive will mark its entry into the commercial software fray with a raft of products designed to provide end-users with an alternative vendor choice. “We are bundling several programmes for retail sale, including Star Office 7 and Java Desktop System, which will act as a complete suite — both an operating system and end-user applications. In effect Sun aims to give users the chance to replace Microsoft completely with a Linux-based operating system and office tools. It would be great to go shopping and see us in Carrefour up there besides Microsoft,” added Porter. Sun sees significant potential in the region’s office software market and believes that customers will appreciate both increased competition and lower prices. “Our products are localised and offer all the applications that people want to find in office software but the main difference is cost. We can save companies up to 60% of what they are currently spending on products and if anything will get their attention then this will,” concluded Porter.
