The browser wars could be back: the Mozilla Foundation has released the first full version of its Firefox browser, which has already had more than eight million downloads of the preview version. Firefox 1.0 made its full debut this week, available for free download from the Mozilla site, and following on from recent studies which suggest that it is taking market share away from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. While IE still dominates the market, its estimated share has fallen from 95.5% in June to 92.9% last month. The Mozilla and Firefox browsers have steadily increased market share in the same period, now up to 6%, with Opera and Apple’s Safari taking the remainder. The full release of Firefox 1.0 is expected to boost its market share further, with the attendant publicity it has generated. “We are delighted to be announcing this major milestone for the Mozilla Foundation and for the Firefox browser, which has been made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of hundreds of community volunteers and developers around the world,” said Mitchell Baker, president of the Mozilla Foundation. “Now millions more will be able to enjoy a better Web experience.” Firefox 1.0 has a number of features which have attracted positive attention, such as popup blocking, tabbed browsing (allowing you to open more than one web page in a single window) and fast rendering speeds. However, what’s being most cited as attracting users to Firefox is the shortcomings of IE in one key area: security. IE has been afflicted with a string of security flaws in recent months, and security experts have been advising users to look at alternative browsers. While Microsoft has tightened up security considerably for IE, the main update is only available to Windows XP users, which many Windows users have not yet upgraded to.
