Wataniya Telecom has secured the Maldives’ second mobile licence. The Kuwaiti cellular operator was announced today as the winner of a bidding process involving three other contestants. The other parties that submitted offers in August were Syriatel, Telecom Malaysia and the Bharti Consortium. Wataniya proposed the shortest deployment period and the highest investment among the bidders, according to a statement by the Telecommunication Authority of the Maldives (TAM). The organisation said it would commence negotiations with Wataniya and award the licence before the end of the year.
