CPU vendor AMD claims to be running away with the PC performance crown thanks to the release of its Athlon 64 FX-55 processor. This new chip is aimed at power hungry hardcore gaming enthusiasts, while AMD’s Athlon 64 processor 4000+, also just launched, is targeted towards businesses and consumers concerned with both high performance and enabling a more secure computing environment. “Since the introduction of the AMD Athlon FX processor over a year ago, we have consistently delivered on our promise to provide the absolute best overall PC processor you can get,” claimed Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager, Microprocessor Business Unit, Computation Products Group, AMD. “Now in our third release, the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor is simply the best and remains unmatched in the industry.” Fujitsu Siemens Computers has already signed up to use AMD’s 4000+ in its range of small form factor Scaleo PCs. Expect to see the chip in the firm’s SCALEO P A4000+, SCALEO T A4000+ and SCALEO X A4000+ models. “Systems based on the AMD Athlon 64 processor 4000+ deliver breakthrough performance and substantial customer-centric benefits to meet all desktop needs,” remarked said Herbert Schönebeck, vice president, Business Unit Consumer, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. AMD’s Athlon 64 processors are capable of running both on current 32-bit systems and future 64-bit based computers. They contain built-in Enhanced Virus Protection (EVP) capabilities, which AMD says offers an extra level of integrated security when combined with Microsoft’s Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 AMD’s Athlon 64 FX-55 and Athlon 64 processor 4000+ are available immediately and are priced at $827 and $729 respectively for single boxed CPUs.
