Siemens is using Gitex 2004 as a platform to showcase its range of new and innovative products. In terms of mobile phone technology, the company is displaying and demonstrating the functions of a whole range of handsets, from fashion mobiles and business phones to sturdy hardwearing outdoor models. Having recently changed its slogan from ‘Be Inspired’ to ‘Design for Life’, Siemens is eager to impress its commitment to the design aspect of mobile telephony at this year’s event. “We have launched seven models of phone between June and September of this year and we are more focused than ever on design and I think this is reflected in our change of slogan,” says Asim Sukhera, vice president Middle East and Africa, Siemens. “Our overall product focus has changed and is now more on design than it has been at any time before,” he adds. With Saudi Arabia having recently banned the use of mobile phones with digital camera’s attached, one would have though that mobile phone manufacturers would have toned down their efforts in the region. However, Siemens is hoping a sensible solution can be reached and continues to display its newest and most technologically advanced models. “You have to respect local sensitivities but from a technical point of view there should be some balance. As a manufacturer we hope to find a solution quickly because people will buy camera phones and take them in to Saudi Arabia.” says Sukhera. “There is a chance that a black market in camera phones could become a reality in the Kingdom,” he adds. In terms of the show, Sukhera believes Gitex is an excellent networking event for Siemens and has become even more selective with the technology on display. “It’s an especially good networking event for the company and is also an excellent chance to speak to the end users of our products,” he explains.
