Recent advances in concrete technology was the focus of a major forum held in Lebanon last week. A host of international speakers presented technical papers at the event, which took place at the Movenpick Hotel and Resort, Beirut. It is the first time the Canmet/ACI International Seminar on Advances in Concrete Technology has been held in the Middle East. World recognised authorities from the US, Canada, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom, together with regional experts from the industry and professors from Lebanese universities presented advanced papers on recent advances in concrete technology with the emphasis placed upon chemical admixtures. Topics such as high performance, high strength concrete and use of superplasticisers were also among the topics dealt with by the speakers. It is hoped that the seminar has increased awareness of potential improvements in the quality of concrete used in construction and how to implement the latest technologies for that purpose. In addition to updated information about the use of mineral admixtures (silica fume, fly ash) in concrete technology, optimisation of use was also discussed. Co-ordinator of the seminar was Handy Chemicals president & CEO Dr Neilu Spiratus and Lebanese Concrete Society-ACI Lebanon Chapter president Khaled Awad. The Lebanese Concrete Society - ACI Lebanon Chapter co-organised the event, which was the first seminar held in Lebanon by the Canmet International Committee. The forum comes on the back of a tricky time for the region’s concrete industry with shortages and fluctuations in price causing panic throughout the sector. However, prices have now stabalised in Lebanon and the crisis has died down.
