Gulf Air has selected EADS Sogerma Services to supply first and business class seats for its Airbus A330 passenger cabin upgrade. The airline is the launch customer for the vendor’s new Evolys premium business class seat. The Bahrain-based carrier has opted for EADS Sogerma Services’ Class 1800 pod-type first class seats and its Evolys premium business class for installation in its six A330-200s. Each aircraft will be configured with eight Class 180 and 24 Evolys seats. EADS Sogerma Services has also been named as Gulf Air's preferred seat supplier for a similar cabin overhaul on its nine Airbus A340-200/300s, which will form the next part of the airline’s fleet upgrade plan. Evolys offers a lounge-bed sleeper profile to provide the optimum rest position within the seat pitch allocated by carriers in business class. The seat-pan and extendable footrest rise to horizontal in sleeper mode, while the seatback lowers to 18 degree angle within the cocoon-style pod. This design is said to be optimal in terms of the lower body’s relationship to the upper torso and the heart – an important health factor during airlines increasingly long international flights. It also avoids the downward-sliding sensation that passengers feel in the so-called lie-flat business seats – which, in reality are inclined all along their full length for the sleeper mode in order to fit within the current 60-inch pitch spacing for business class. Each seat also weighs in at less than 100 kg and operates with just two seat motors for easy maintenance.
