Samsung will soon appoint a distributor for its hard disk drive (HDD) products as the IT behemoth plans to challenge established players in yet another sector of the Middle East IT market. Samsung is now moving into the regional HDD market after ensuring that it has enough product to meet demand. “Samsung’s drives are a preferred product of the OEM industry due to our quality and this puts various constraints on our supply capacity. But we are now in a position to ensure availability of hard disk drives for the Middle East market,” said Kwang Hak Koh, senior manager at Samsung Gulf Electronics. Samsung will be looking for distributors who have the resources to provide the channel with rapid product supply through efficient and well-structured logistics. As there are few distributors around who meet such criteria and are not already signed up with other HDD vendors, Samsung is looking hard at all potential partners and will announce a distributor in the coming weeks. “HDD distribution is a different game altogether. It requires know-how. We are looking for a channel partner or partners who are suited to this business, who know the market and who have the resources to supply Samsung’s channel across the region,” added Koh. “You will see more aggressive steps taken for Samsung to be a recognizable force in the hard disk drive market. Globally there are four or five players and Samsung is one of them but we will also become a recognizable player in the region,” said Koh.
