Acer top of the pack

Acer sees its share of the Gulf’s mobile PC market soar year-on-year and beats HP to the top spot in Saudi according to figures from analysts IDC.

Acer has claimed top spot for notebook shipments to the Gulf during the second quarter of 2004, beating off more established rivals such as HP, Dell, and Toshiba. According to analysts at IDC, the Taiwanese vendor has seen its Saudi growth rise by 350% year-on-year, from 1,795 units in 2003 to 8,086 units by 2004. Acer’s Saudi market share has risen from 8% to 23%. Acer’s figures for UAE shipments are even more impressive — the year-on-year growth was a whopping 1290%, and the vendor grabbed an 18% market share, up from 3% the previous year. Acer shifted 7,891 laptops during Q2 of 2004, compared to 568 the previous year, and is only 81 units behind market leader HP. The results have been hailed as exceptional by industry experts. “Acer’s year-on-year growth is remarkable, demonstrating one of the highest annual growth rates that we have ever recorded, moving Acer to a strong position in the Saudi Arabian and UAE markets,” said Jyoti Lachandani, regional director at IDC Middle East and North Africa. Overall, the UAE market showed strong year-on-year growth, with a 142% leap in laptop shipments, up from 18,124 to 43,844. The Saudi market saw slower growth over the same period, with shipments rising to 35,544 from 21,443, an increase of 66% year-on-year. Forecasts for Saudi Arabia’s IT market have been downgraded of late due to political factors affecting business in the Kingdom, whereas the UAE’s increasing promotion of itself as a tourist destination has fuelled laptop sales. Vendors Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens and Sony all saw their shipment units grow significantly over the last year, with Saudi growth rates of 150%, 337%, and 158% respectively. UAE growth rates for the Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens and Sony were also impressive, at 249%, 129%, and 440% respectively. The only vendor to lose significant market share was HP, which saw its portion of the Saudi mobile market fall from 37% to 16%, and its UAE market share drop to 18% from 32% the previous year.
