Electronic retailer Plug-Ins has opened the first of three Dubai stores planned for the second half of 2004. The first of these, an outlet in Dubai’s prestigious new shopping complex Souq Medinat Jumeirah, opened this week. “The Souq area is going to be a huge tourist attraction, and we wanted to be involved from the first day of the project,” said Miran Ellahee, marketing manager at Plug-Ins. “In terms of electronic retailers in Jumeirah, there aren’t many places to choose from. We wanted to give not only tourists but also the local population a more convenient shopping experience.” Plug-Ins has penciled in further openings during September and late October for stores in Deira and Bur Juman. The retailer describes the openings as part of a natural expansion, and it believes that there are still segments of the population who are not adequately catered for by the electronics retail industry. “Our Deira store, which will open in the new Reef mall in September, will fill another gap in the market. Many of the local Arab population would prefer an alternative to Western expatriate oriented shopping centres and that is why we have gone for this location,” added Ellahee.” “It is a natural progression for Plug-Ins. We are always prepared to look for the right opportunities and with malls springing up left right and centre we are always thinking about how these fit in with our plans. We have certain criteria and look at prospects as they arise. If there is a match we will pursue it further,” said Ellahee. The opening of these three stores will almost double the number of Plug-Ins outlets, from five to eight. With footfall figures of 2.2 million last year and a 72% increase in sales, the retailer is banking on another successful year of growth during 2004. “We are coming around to September and the focus now is on Gitex. It is a huge occasion and the year can hinge on Gitex. We are planning some fantastic events and will build on last year’s success,” concluded Ellahee.
