Acer Computers Middle East has taken the notebook sales lead in Saudi Arabia, and is just 0.2% from the top spot in the UAE market. Figures from global analysts IDC show that Acer grew by 1289% for notebook sales in the UAE during the second quarter of 2004, compared to the same period last year. This growth has afforded Acer a UAE market share of 18%, only 0.2% behind the leader. "Acer's year-on-year growth is remarkable, demonstrating one of the highest annual growth rates that we have ever recorded, moving Acer to a strong position in the Saudi Arabian and UAE markets," says Jyoti Lachandani, regional director, IDC Middle East and North Africa. In the Kingdom, Acer notebooks took first position with 22.7 % of the market, 6% ahead of its nearest rival, representing a growth rate of 350.5 per cent on the second quarter of 2003. “These figures represent a significant success for Acer in the region’s key markets of Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and is a testament to the hard work of our people,” says Krishna Murthy, general manager, Acer Computers Middle East. Acer is also outperforming its competitors in the desktop market, recording the highest growth rates in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE, up 271.8% and 132.3% respectively from Q2 last year. The company now has 12% market share in the UAE and 13.8% in Saudi, moving it up to third position in both territories. When figures for both notebooks and desktops are combined, Acer ranks third in the Kingdom with 17.1% market share, and is 0.2% away from securing second spot in the UAE, with 15% share, compared to this time last year.
