Bahrain’s Ministry of Commerce is working with 3Com to bring people closer to the government with an e-commerce one-stop shop. The Bahrain Internet Exchange, situated in the country’s Seef Mall shopping centre, will provide citizens with access to an online government portal. Citizens will now be able interact with Bahrain’s ministries to make enquiries, pay bills and complete other government transactions such as licence applications, without having to travel to separate offices. “The Ministry of Commerce’s e-government initiative is designed to bring the workings of government closer to the citizens of Bahrain,” says Ali Ahmed Radhi, Assistant Under Secretary for Domestic Trade Affairs and vice chairman of the Bahrain Internet Exchange. “If this glimpse of the future relationship between state and citizen is to be successful, it is vital that we have a network infrastructure capable of addressing our requirements of availability, flexibility, accessibility and security,” he adds. The solution comprises 3Com® XRN™ technology, which allows businesses to better manage the costs of building corporate networks, along with the first Middle Eastern deployment of 3Com’s Security Switch 6200, which delivers security services across multiple network segments and layers from a single, centrally managed platform. “The new network had to provide uninterrupted, robust services and be highly secure. Its potential impact on the whole e-government project is significant,” says Tarek Ghoul, Gulf and the Levant manager at 3Com. “The infrastructure has to support the future growth of the ministry and its e-initiatives and ensure the privacy, confidentiality and security of the different organisations and their customers,” adds Ghoul.
