eCompany, Etisalat’s e-business unit, announced that its mail anti-virus facility would now be offered at no charge for two years instead of one. The service will remain free for subscribers until December 22, 2005 after which minimal charges may be applied said the company. This is in response to customer feedback and to the growing global threat from viruses. The facility intends to offer business and residential customers hosted by the eCompany EIM Mail Service a virus-free e-mail service. Noting the significance of the anti-virus facility, Abdulla Hashim, senior manager for business development and marketing, eCompany, says: “Keeping it free for subscribers for a year more than originally intended demonstrates our commitment to enhance their e-mail experience.” Powered by the McAfee anti-virus solution, the facility claims to have reduced the number of virus-infected emails reaching eCompany subscribers. The free anti-virus solution serves more than 450,000 plus e-mail subscribers and reports to have detected more than 67 million virus infected emails since December 2003. It removes viruses at the network level, before they reach the customers’ eCompany EIM Mail service inbox. To provide the most comprehensive protection, viruses are removed rather than simply cleaned. Customers can opt to receive the original e-mail with a message informing them that a virus has been removed. They also have the option of enabling or disabling the anti-virus service and notification. Details of the service are available at www.eim.ae/mail/antivirus. eCompany is the newly merged Emirates Internet & Multimedia (EIM) and e-solutions (Comtrust) business units of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat), UAE's state run telco.
