New DTH platform to be launched from Dubai

Satellite services provider SamaCom has signed a transponder deal with Arabsat to launch a new Direct to Home (DTH) platform from Dubai.

Satellite services provider SamaCom, which is also a subsidiary of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone, has signed a transponder deal with Arabsat to launch a new Direct to Home (DTH) platform. According to the agreement, SamaCom will build ground facilities necessary for the new DTH platform, which will comprise a multiplexing platform and uplink earth station. The two companies will also co-operate in marketing the new DTH platform using transponder capacity on Arabsat 2D satellite. “We are very happy to establish a strong partnership with Arabsat,” said Ahmad Bin Byat, director general of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone. “The new agreement with Arabsat gives us an excellent opportunity to reinforce our commitment to serve broadcasters targeting the Middle East,” he added. Presently DMC-based broadcasters transmit their signals to Arabsat’s DTH platform in Tunis before being uplinked on Arabsat 2D. SamaCom’s new platform will now enable customers to directly uplink to ARABSAT 2D. This will enhance broadcast quality and reduce satellite space costs for delivering the signal to Tunis. This platform will also allow broadcasters from Europe, America and Asia to deliver their content from other satellites on the Arabsat/SamaCom platform. The new platform complements SamaCom’s portfolio of DTH platforms for Nilesat, Asiasat 2, Asiasat 3S, Hotbird and Atlantic Bird satellites. SamaCom currently broadcasts more than 36 television channels from its own teleport. Its customer base includes over 25 broadcasters and it provides uplinks to over 15 satellites. It also provides terrestrial TV and radio broadcasting services to Dubai Media Inc. (DMI) from its facilities in Dubai and the northern Emirates. “SamaCom’s focus is on delivering value to its customers and this agreement will help us advance that objective,” said Yatinder Mahajan, director of SamaCom. “This partnership will also help us consolidate our customer base and move forward aggressively with our expansion strategy,” he added.
