Extended ERP vendor SSA Global has bulked up its expertise in the process manufacturing software space after buying Marcam from Invensys for an undisclosed sum. Purchasing software companies from Invensys is familiar territory for SSA Global’s M&A team. Invensys was the owner of Baan prior to SSA Global’s high-profile purchase of the ERP specialist in July 2003. “With more than 40 years of cumulative experience, the acquisition of Marcam is a significant milestone for our combined process manufacturing customers and prospects,” said Mike Greenough, president, chairman and CEO of SSA Global. “This transaction also further solidifies our position in the process manufacturing sector and underscores the commitment to deliver extended solutions that increase the value of existing technology investments.” Marcam offers specific expertise in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical industries with ERP solutions designed to streamline plant and supply chain operations. SSA Global claims the newest addition to its fast-expanding software family will beef up its ability to offer manufacturing companies optimized financials, inventory management, order management and purchasing as well as greater operational visibility. Marcam has implemented over 1,000 deployments on five continents in 20 years and has a global network of offices supporting its worldwide presence. SSA Global’s acquisition is further evidence of the consolidation forces at work in the enterprise software space. While Baan specialised in the discrete manufacturing sector, Marcam replicates that expertise in the process manufacturing space. Although SSA Global has a direct sales force in the Middle East, channel partners still account for some 70% of sales. SSA Global is keen for its Middle East partners to look beyond the traditional ERP implementation opportunity and start cross-selling customer relationship management (CRM), product lifecycle management (PLM) and SCM solutions as well.
