US Robotics has launched a new router, which offers a plethora of security features and what the firm claims are unique file server capabilities. The company’s new USR8200 Firewall/VPN (Virtual Private Network)/NAS (Network Attached Storage) Router is aimed at networked SOHO and SMB operations and costs $320. "With the growing emphasis on security, the ability to protect sensitive data is a primary concern for any network," said Yusuf Syed, regional manager Middle East, U.S. Robotics. "The Middle East has recently witnessed a significant number of viral intrusions. Due to a lack of strong network protection infrastructure, businesses continue to be susceptible to such attacks. US Robotics is the only network equipment provider exclusively offering a firewall router, VPN client and server, as well as a NAS appliance, packaged in a single device at such an affordable price." The new router is powered by Intel’s IXP422 network processor and incorporates a set of security features that include Stateful Packet Inspection firewall; protection against Denial of Service attacks; and DMZ (an area outside the firewall) and VPN support (Client and Server – IPSec and PPTP). Equipped with 64MB RAM and 16MB of flash memory, US Robotics reckons the device provides the kind of throughput necessary for today’s data intensive environments. The USR8200 requires no end user licenses, supports up to 253 IPSec connections, and is easily set-up via a web-based user interface. The USR8200 also supports NAS and, on the connections front, includes USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394 or FireWire ports, adding networked storage. Users can just plug in external drives to deliver networked storage accessible to all network members on a LAN. External access is also available via the built-in FTP server. Earlier this week US Robotics conducted a specialised training session for its distributors and resellers in the UAE, with the aim of enhancing technical support for newly launched wireless and broadband products such as the USR8200 router. The day-long session was part of U.S. Robotics strategy to ensure complete customer support in both pre-sales and post-sales scenarios.
