Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE, is preparing to make an announcement about new aircraft at next month’s Farnborough Air Show. The carrier has already committed itself to having a fleet of 50 aircraft by 2009, and an interview in today’s Gulf News, Etihad’s chairman, Dr Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan, suggest that the first new order could be made soon. “We have begun talks with both Airbus and Boeing for new aircraft to meet our expansion plans. We are looking at different options such as wide-bodied aircraft. You will hear more at the Farnborough Air Show soon,” he said. Sheik Ahmed did not say which aircraft Etihad would order at the show, if any, but when asked about the Boeing 7E7, he said, “it is an excellent aircraft and we are interested in that.”
