The main contract for the construction of the new hotel at the Mall of the Emirates has been awarded to Al Jaber Grinaker in joint venture with Bu Haleeba. The hotel will be strategically located just off Interchange 4 of Sheikh Zayed Road in the Al Barsha area. The contract calls for the construction of an 18-storey hotel with 400 keys. Two basement parking areas and two retail levels interface with a ski slope and shopping development that is in progress on the site. The building area is 82 000 m2 and will require 35 000 m3 of concrete, 170 000 m2 of formwork and 4500 tonnes of reinforcement. The contract duration is 18 months and will expire in November 2005. The Dhs218 million contract was awarded by Majid Al Futtaim Investments through a tendering process. Other companies involved in the project are Mace International as project managers; Holford Associates the architect, Davis Langdon Arabian Gulf for QS, Mott MacDonald as structural engineers; and WSP Middle East for the MEP works. Meanwhile, construction works on Mall of the Emirates continues to move forward at a clip, with the project looking on track for its target completion in September 2005. Work on the project is clearly visible from the highway and preparations are already underway for production of the real snow, which will be utilised within. Mall of Emirates will play home to over 350 shops and more than 240 000 m2 of prime retail and leisure space, making it one of the biggest malls outside North America. Progress on one of the complex’s key features, the first snow dome and indoor ski slope in the Middle East, is well underway. “This is one of the most ambitious mall projects in the world, certainly outside of North America,” says Peter Walichnowski, chief executive officer, Majid Al Futtaim Investments, “Even now the construction site illustrates the sheer scale of the project and the fact we are on schedule is testament to the commitment of the entire team” he added.
