Construction Group meets to pick committee members

11-member body reserves seat for UAE Contractors Association

More than 50 members of the recently formed Construction Business Group have elected a representative committee of 11 at a meeting that was held at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The committee was elected from a list of 28 nominees. Two reserve committee officials were also chosen in an open ballot. The Construction Business Group was formed under the Dubai Chamber umbrella last month with the aim of acting as a bridge linking member interests, the chamber and the local government. The meeting to elect the representative committee was chaired by Ahmed Al Banna, deputy director general of the chamber and Fahad Al Gergawi, the chamber’s director of trade services and industrial development. In his remarks on the election, Al Banna pointed out that the construction sector is an essential part of the economy of Dubai and hoped that the new business group will give the local industry an important voice. “The Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry is committed to encouraging dialogue in business and new business groups such as the Construction Business Group will play a key role in maintaining Dubai’s position as a world-class commercial centre,” Al Banna stated. The Construction Business Group representative committee members elected on are: Sherif Abid Boghdady, managing partner of Al Hudaiba Contracting; Saeed Khalfan, chairman and managing director of SSK Group; Hosam Najeeb Jaffar, director at Arvan Saman; Tariq Hussain Khansaheb, director at Khansaheb Civil Engineering; Emad Azmy Ishak, general manager of Al Abbar General Contracting Company; Abdulla Al Arif, owner of Naresco Contracting; Graham McCaig, general manager of Dutco Balfour Beatty Group; Ali Nasser bin Jarash, director at the Bin Jarash Contracting; Hassan Al Amir of Luzan Contracting and Majed Mohammed Al Kazim of Act Contracting. The meeting also agreed that one seat will be dedicated for the UAE Contractors Association. The two reserve members that were elected are Milad A. Zakharia, managing director of Sands Contracting Company, and Laiju K. Ahmed, managing director of Al Sahara Contracting. The newly elected representative committee is to shortly meet at the Dubai Chamber to elect a chairman, a vice-chairman and a general secretary. The meeting will also map out a strategy, business plan, goals and objectives for the group and plan a general assembly meetings of sector representatives. “Establishing such business groups means that important views can be shared between opinion leaders and decision-makers within industries, providing a platform to further improve best practice and evolve policy,” said Fahad Al Gergawi.
