Tablet PCs and Microsoft technologies are powering the first e-learning project for students at Al Bayan School for Girls, Saudi Arabia. Providing an electronic educational environment for Al Bayan students and teachers alike, features include allowing remote access to learning programmes and online collaboration between students and teachers. MGD Computer Systems, a Microsoft partner in Saudi Arabia, developed and implemented the project's solution on Microsoft educational and platform products. “This project has been a great achievement. This is a bright example of how technology can deliver improved learning and teaching methods to help students get the most out of their education,” says Mrs. Rifah Binladen, Al Bayan School Principal. Al Bayan e-learning solution uses Microsoft Class Server, a learning management platform, to enable teachers to deliver lessons over the web, view students’ reports and target areas for improvement. “Al Bayan students no longer carry text books and homework back and forth to school. Today, they can log on from their homes to the school server, solve and submit homework, access their text books, take notes, view their grades and teachers’ remarks and have live dialogue with their teachers and colleagues online,” explains Maher Raga'a, CEO of MGD Computer Systems. The solution also uses Microsoft Journal Note, which is a note-taking program that allows students, and teachers to write notes, draw diagrams and copy information directly into the Tablet PC using a stylus and a touch screen. After five months of development, the first phase of the programme began in April 2003 and 150 students at the intermediate stage (seventh to ninth grades) with 28 teachers have completely switched over to an electronic class environment.
