First concrete walls spotted rising from Palm Jumeirah

Two identical sewerage treatment plants are being fast tracked on crescents AA and GG

Concrete structures have now started to appear on the Palm Jumeirah following the full reclamation of the first of the two palm-shaped islands off the coast of Dubai. The new structures include two new sewerage treatment plants that are part of a contract awarded to Target Engineering Construction. The design and build contract is on a fast track for completion, just 181 days, and comprises the construction of two identical plants with both external and internal walls. The sewerage treatment plants are located on crescents AA and GG. The project represents a significant milestone, as it the first concrete structure above ground on either of the two islands of The Palm. Owing to the project’s tight programme, the contractor has opted for Doka Top 50 wall formwork. Each tank has a 35 m diameter external wall and a 28 m diameter internal wall. Both walls are 8 m high. Two buffer walls connect the internal walls and pass through the centre of the tanks. The pouring of the total wall height of 8 m was made in one single pour lasting six hours. Doka provided the safety platforms all around the tank to facilitate safe and easy pouring. Besides, high quality concrete surfaces were also achieved using Doka formwork. Doka’s scope of supply includes formwork for 50% of the external walls, 50% of the internal walls and one set of 27.8 m buffer walls. The company has also supplied the water stops, which were used to prevent any leakage. According to Mohamed Ahmed Nasser, project manager, Target Engineering Construction: “We have been very satisfied with the choice of formwork and the results it achieved. We have been pleased with the steady stream of deliveries, flexibility of design and prompt supervisory assistance for Doka, which made our job as smooth running as possible. Construction Week last issue, had reported that infrastructure works are well underway on Palm Jumeirah and that work on foundations on some of the island's villas has begun. The first of the villas are being built on Frond E and are in the Signature style (Grand Rotunda). They provide 700 m2 of built-up area within an overall plot area of some 1300 m2. “Palm Jumeirah is designed to be a residential environment of unequalled quality giving residents the opportunity to own the most luxurious, waterfront properties,” says Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Nakheel. Work has started on these properties too: there are some 3000 workers that are getting busy on developing various other structures on the island.
