Abu Dhabi will launch a tourism promotion board within the next two months to position the emirate as an emerging tourist destination in the Middle East. According to His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the tourism board will mark a new wave of tourism growth in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Sultan also announced that Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will manage a 265-room luxury resort on behalf of the National Investment Corporation (NIC), Abu Dhabi. “Abu Dhabi has quality hotels and hotel brands,” said Abdulla Ali Al Saadi, general manager of NIC. “The destination needs marketing and promotion efforts.” Industry watchers predict the Abu Dhabi tourism board will be similar to the Al Ain Economic Development & Tourism Promotion Authority. Slated to open in 2006, the Fairmont Abu Dhabi Resort & Villas is a US $100 million development that will highlight the ‘warmth and diversity of local culture’. The hotel will be located on the breakwater island development overlooking the Abu Dhabi corniche, adjacent to the Marina mall. Modeled on a traditional Arabian palace, the resort will have a network of seawater canals connecting various facilities and guests will be ferried in ‘shashas’ or Arabic boats. The property will consist of four low-rise buildings including 57 Fairmont Gold rooms, the brand’s exclusive ‘hotel within a hotel’ product, a restaurant promenade with 12 restaurants and cafes, and 5450 square metres of indoor and outdoor function space. There are also plans to build 50, one two and three bedroom villas as part of the resort. “The addition of the Fairmont Abu Dhabi Resort & Villas will further strengthen our position in the UAE, one of the world’s fastest growing travel and tourism destinations,” said William Fatt, chief executive officer, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is a leading North American owner/operator of luxury hotels and resorts and currently manages 83 properties and more than 33000 guestrooms.
