Etisalat has recruited Alcatel to enhance the 3G mobile network it launched in the UAE in December last year. The deal will see Alcatel providing the monopoly operator with 3G solutions including radio systems, circuit-switched core network systems, as well as associated platforms for the deployment of applications. According to the vendor, the move will see an extension of Etisalat’s UMTS network in selected coverage areas and allow for smooth interworking between GSM/GPRS and UMTS cells. The equipment forms part of the product range developed by Evolium SAS, a joint venture between Alcatel and Fujitsu. The French vendor already supplies Etisalat with equipment for the radio portion of its GSM and GPRS network.
