Memory vendor Micron has appointed Memory Technology Corporation (MTC) as its master distributor for the Middle East and Africa. MTC expects to generate an extra US$5m in sales during 2004 through Micron business. Although not contractually exclusive, MTC will become a preferred partner for Micron to build its business through in the region. Although just five years old, memory channel specialist MTC has built partnerships with the top components distributors in each country it operates in and boasts 300 active channel customers in its client list. Rizwan Noor, vice president at MTC, says: “MTC and Micron go way back and their success is intertwined in this region. MTC helped bring Spectek, which is a division of Micron, to the market a few years back. Today Spectek holds 60% to 65% market share in the Middle East and Africa.” 70-strong MTC is headquartered in Dubai and also operates a facility at Jebel Ali as well as offices in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Sales in 2003 reached US$120m. Adds Noor: “MTC works with sub-distributors, resellers, VARs and systems integrators. We will be focusing on Micron memory parts this year as well as targeting niche markets such as the server, desktop and PC space.” “The market is definitely picking up,” continues Noor. “We predict a 20% increase in the market size, PC penetration is increasing and, as the UAE reinforces its hold as the hub of the region, local companies will have a greater role. Turkey is also a market to watch out for this year.” Given MTC’s success at building up the Spectek brand in the Middle East, the company will have been a natural choice for Micron to build a deep regional distribution agreement with. With sales of US$120m a year, Micron also has the scale to ensure excellent stock availability and competitive credit terms to the reseller market.
