Samsung has focused in on imaging with the launch of three mobile devices at ITU Telecom Africa 2004. The manufacturer has unveiled its first mega pixel GSM camera phone, the P730, and pledged to launch a two mega-pixel device by the end of 2004. It is also showcasing two ‘slide-up’ camera-phones, the E800 and E810, which it plans to make commercially available later this year. The P730, which Samsung says will be launched in Africa in Q304, offers six still-image sizes and a digital zoom feature. The device allows users to take photographs when the unit is opened vertically and also when the LCD is rotated to a horizontal position. Moving picture quality has also been enhanced from earlier models with QVGA recording and playback, according to the vendor. The P730 contains an internal memory of 64MB and the option to increase the phone’s capacity with the addition of a multimedia card. It also has a maximum continuous recording time of about 100 minutes, Samsung says. “Camera functions are becoming more essential for mobile communications. We will introduce a two mega pixel camera-featured mobile phone by the end of this year,” says Ki Tae Lee, president, telecoms network business, Samsung Electronics. The E-800 and E-810, meanwhile, have been fitted with a semi-automatic slide design, in contrast to the vendor’s typical clamshell format. The 86g E-800 incorporates a VGA camera and wide screen, as well as photo call line identification (CLI). While it uses a small mirror to allow self-portraits, the E810 includes a 180-degree rotating lens. The latter also features a motion-JPEG function to allow users to capture up to 30 seconds of video, as well as a multi-shot feature that can produce fifteen consecutive shots. Both are set to become available during Q204.
