HP has retained its lead in the EMEA handheld device market, according to the latest figures from research firm Canalys. The mobile device market is still booming in the region, with total sales approaching two and a half million units, up 62% on the same period last year, Canalys said. With a 56% growth year-on-year, HP has out-shipped rival palmOne for the third consecutive quarter. HP shipped an estimated 251,530 units in the period, compared to 250,310 units for palmOne, including Handspring devices. PalmOne acquired Handspring last year, but saw its overall shipments only rise slightly from last year’s estimated 246,310 units. In overall unit sales, both companies were dwarfed by Nokia, which nearly doubled its sales compared to the same period last year, up from 631,110 units in Q1 2003, to 1,194, 760 for Q1 this year.
