Muscat Municipality has chosen Veritas NetBackup software as its network data protection solution. The system is designed to secure the Municipality’s vast stores of information and make it easily available to employees. As one of the largest organisations in Oman, Muscat Municipality has more than 4,000 employees working from either its head office in Muscat or at its five regional offices situated around the country. “Being responsible for everything from the construction of roads and the maintenance of buildings, to providing health services and processing housing applications means that Muscat Municipality generates a vast amount of critical data every day,” said Yaqoob Dur Mohammed Al Bulushi, director general at Muscat Municipality and Supervisor of Information Systems. “Because we are responsible for supplying residents, businesses and the community at large with a multitude of services, it is integral to our operation that our information is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By deploying Veritas NetBackup software, we are guaranteeing security for our vital information, and our organisation can now back-up almost double the volume of information in about half the time it previously required for this process.” As Muscat Municipality has moved towards a paperless environment over recent years as part of the Oman’s e-government initiative, there has been an increased requirement for a comprehensive storage solution. Muscat Municipality has reported that it has reduced its back-up time by up to 40% due to the automation features in the Veritas NetBackup solution. “With organisations throughout Oman now keeping all of their information electronically in line with the government’s drive to create an e-environment, there is an increasing level of awareness amongst decision-makers to have data backed up. Automating and centralising this information has enabled Muscat Municipality to focus our IT resources in other areas, making us a more efficient and cost-effective part of the government,” said Al Bulushi. “Muscat Municipality had a number of key requirements when seeking data protection software, including ‘single instance store’ to prevent duplication of storage for the same files or applications, non-intrusive backups to preserve efficiency, and a solution that enables a lower overall cost of ownership. We’re delighted that Veritas NetBackup was selected as the ideal fit for the Municipality’s rigorous criteria,” said Sam Tayan, regional manager, Veritas Middle East.
