Cisco Systems has formed an agreement with the Lebanese American University to set up the first Cisco Academy Training Centre (CATC) in the Middle East, providing a regional base for IT university teaching. The CATC will provide a training and support centre for Cisco’s Middle East Networking Academy programme, a public private partnership between Cisco, governments and universities for the purpose of providing IT education and training to students. The LAU centre will train and support instructors, and will ensure that quality targets for teaching are met. Speaking of the potential benefits for students here in the Middle East, Dr. Riyad Nassar, president of LAU said, “With Cisco’s support we hope to continue delivering on our promise of broadening educational opportunities and providing increased exposure to technical career paths and vocational opportunities in the Middle East.” When asked about the choice of LAU as the first Cisco Academy Training Centre, Jacek Murawski, director of Cisco’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa Networking Academy programme commented, “The Lebanese American University has been selected as a CATC because of its ability, qualifications, willingness to support the region’s academies, and strict compliance to Cisco’s quality assurance measures.” Murawski added the opening of the training centre demonstrated that Cisco held a strong belief in the region and its people, saying, “We are fully committed to the Middle East and see this as a major milestone in driving forward the region’s human resources to increased participation and employment in the global economy.”
