GCC journalists from across print, broadcast and Internet media are competing for a US $3000 prize for the best report on obesity. The Roche Gulf Awards will reward journalists who excelled in raising awareness throughout the GCC and educating the public on the dangers of being overweight. Judging criteria will focus on impact of subject matter, interest to reader, depth of research and accuracy of information. Applicants from daily, weekly and broadcast industries must apply before May 15, while monthly publications have until June 05. According to a GCC-wide survey carried out in 2002 by the Bahrain Centre for Studies and Research, the obesity ratio in Gulf states reached 60% with women suffering from the disease more than men. Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Roche is a research-orientated healthcare group in the field of obesity. Those interested should contact Roche directly.
