US closes UAE embassy and consulate

US shuts down embassy and consulate general’s office following specific threat to security.

US diplomatic representation in the United Arab Emirates was temporarily put on hold today (March 24) following an undisclosed, but ‘specific threat.’ A source confirmed both teh embassy in Abu Dhabi ad consulate general's office in were closed, but would be open for business on Saturday. A statement released by the embassy said security arrangements would be reassessed over the weekend. “We have no specific threat information against the American community in the UAE, however, the Department of State has issued a new worldwide caution and a new Middle East-North Africa public announcement in light of the killing of Sheikh Yassin in Gaza," the statement went on to say. Yesterday, the State Department suggested there were growing indications Al Qaeda was preparing to hit US targets in the Middle East and North Africa, warning of possible attacks on aviation, shipping and other means of transport.
