The InterContinental Hotels Group is set to grow its portfolio of hotels and resorts in the Middle East and Africa to more than 80 over the next three years. Five new properties are currently being built and the hotel claims many more are in the pipeline. “We’re looking to add InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn hotels, both in the countries where we already have a presence, and in other emerging markets. We will announce several new management contracts shortly,” said Chris Moloney, chief operating officer, InterContinental Hotels Group, Middle East and Africa. The InterContinental Abu Soma Resort Red Sea recently became the company’s 72nd property under management in the region. In Oman, the former Holiday Inn Salalah will open as a revamped Crowne Plaza resort next month followed by the InterContinental Heliopolis Cairo that will open as part of Citystars Heliopolis Cairo, a US$600 million development combining shopping, entertainment, office and residential facilities. A new Holiday Inn resort opens at Taba in Egypt towards the end of this year, while other Holiday Inn properties are also under development in Cairo, and on the Dead Sea in Jordan, along with a new InterContinental hotel in Aqaba also in Jordan. The chain says the shifting of its regional office for Middle East and Africa from Cairo to Dubai has boosted its expansion plans. “In the few months that we have been here we have felt considerable benefits, particularly in terms of the new opportunities we’re finding to grow our business,” said Moloney. With 12 properties in the region compared with 39 for InterContinental and 21 for Holiday Inn, InterContinental group is also focusing on expanding its Crowne Plaza brand.
