German hotel chain Kempinski Hotels & Resorts will manage the five star hotel attached to the 2.4 million square feet Mall of the Emirates developed in Dubai. The Kempinski Resort Mall of the Emirates is scheduled to open in September 2005 and will be a 400-suite property with 24 duplex ski chalets that offer views over the region’s first indoor ski resort. Besides being a part of the largest retail development in the Middle East, developers claim it will be the largest mall outside North America, guests at the 48,000 square metre hotel will be able to go skiing or simply soak up the ‘winter’ atmosphere in fine dining restaurants overlooking the ski slope. “The agreement between ourselves and Kempinski is a key building block as we continue the development of the Mall of the Emirates,” said Peter Walichnowski, chief executive officer, Majid Al Futaim Investments. “We are looking at world class partners to ensure our vision of an ‘experience like no other’ is fulfilled. Kempinski will help us achieve this vision.” “We are delighted to be the hotel group of choice managing this resort at the Mall of the Emirates,” said Ulrich Eckhardt, vice president Middle East of Kempinski Hotels & Resorts. “This Mall will become a central attraction in Dubai and fits in very well with Kempinski’s philosophy.” This is Kempinski’s first hotel in Dubai; the chain’s first property in the region is the 187-room Ajman Kempinski Hotel Resort in the UAE, which opened in 1998. The group is expanding its portfolio in the Middle East and opened a 133-room property in Kuwait’s Al Julai district last year. Kempinski will also manage Abu Dhabi’s US$ 490 million ornate Conference Palace Hotel, slated to open at the end of this year.
