Gulf Air and Oman Air have further strengthened their cooperation by signing a comprehensive code share agreement. The deal combines the carriers’ networks in the Gulf, East Africa and around the world to provide customers with a more comprehensive offering, especially out of Muscat. Both airlines will remain independent on the deal and continue to compete, but the marketing deal signals a closer relationship between the two. The benefits to customers include network expansion through reciprocal codeshare service, more flight time and connection options, reciprocal frequent flyer points, mutual airport lounge access and a joint systems development. The expanded codeshare cooperation begins immediately with flights operated by Oman Air to Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar (formerly operated by Gulf Traveller) and Mombassa. In the summer, Gulf Air’s flights, including Muscat to Bangkok, Dhaka, Jeddah, Riyadh and the soon-be-launched non-stop London service will also come under the deal. “This agreement is entirely in keeping with our network strategy,” says Gulf Air’s president and chief executive, James Hogan. “Working with our partners we can extend the scope and reach of our network, to achieve a win-win situation. Some of the changes have already been implemented and I am delighted to report that there has been a virtually seamless transition with minimal passenger disruption.” The deal will benefit Gulf Air through access to Oman Air’s distribution network, which is particularly strong in East Africa. Oman Air, meanwhile, gains access to a wider network of destinations, which will make Seeb a more important regional hub. "It is a natural step for the two national airlines of Oman to combine their strength in an alliance,” says Abdul Rahman Al Busaidy, CEO of Oman Air.
