Egypt’s Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) has created a high-speed data network for its latest facility by implementing Foundry’s BigIron 15000 local area network (LAN) switch and FastIron Edge Switches (FES). The new building’s network will not only carry the internal voice and data traffic of its inhabitants, but it will also integrate with IDSC’s existing wide area network (WAN) infrastructure to ensure users can access the applications and data they need to advise the Egyptian cabinet and help drive the country’s information technology industry forward. “IDSC believes that no work place should go on without strong and sustainable communication infrastructure. As such, a communication infrastructure is a must and this is why we have deployed the Foundry products,” says Ziad Abdel Tawwab, IDSC’s IT manager. “We have lots of applications travelling [over] the network, including database [traffic], web traffic, Voice over IP, video conferencing and more,” he adds. In addition to carrying the voice and data traffic generated by IDSC’s latest facility, the implementation of yet another high-speed network will help the government body take a step closer to its vision of a paperless organisations in which all documents are sent and stored electronically. Such a move will not only help cut costs for IDSC, but also help it accelerate decision-making and boost its service levels. “IDSC is moving to be a paperless organisation, with lots of systems for planning and follow up, attendance, financial tasks, databases, archiving, e-mail and other internet services that cannot withstand one-minute downtime in any part of the network,” says Tawwab. “Fortunately Foundry products deliver reliable, nearly non-stop service for communication facilities,” he explains.
