UAE monopoly operator, Etisalat, has unveiled its pricing and marketing strategy for the 3G mobile services it launched in December. The telco has selected Mubashir to be the brand name for the service, which will offer users mobile video calling and high-speed mobile internet access, as well as multimedia messaging (MMS) subscriptions in an all-in-one package. Once users have bought a 3G-enabled phone, they can register for Mubashir for an initial fee of Dhs200 and flat monthly fee of Dhs25, on top of standard rental charges. Video calls will be priced at 75 Fils per minute while data services will cost 1 fils per KB of information downloaded. Both post and prepaid customers can migrate to the new service without having to change their numbers or SIM cards, according to Etisalat. The operator says it is working with retailers and mobile phone manufacturers to increase the number of 3G-enabled phones that are available in the UAE. It is also running a promotional campaign to attract new subscribers by offering video calling for the price of current voice calls and mobile internet access for free. Throughout the promotional period, video calls are being priced at 24 fils per minute during peak times and 18 fils per minute off peak.
